Artist Interview - Max Walker
Shiny Objects 18 June - 6 July 25'
1. How old were you when you first made a piece of jewellery?
First ever piece, probably 5? I used to play around in my parents workshop and every now and then a piece would get cast.
The first proper piece came when I was about 16-17. It was a ring of Darth Vader with dreadlocks smoking a Joint.
2. There is such a variety of shapes and motifs in the rings you make, where do you draw inspiration from? Are there recurring themes or symbols you return to?
Someone pointed out to me once that I use a lot of squares in my work which I never really noticed until then. Looking back on my work I definitely see where they are coming from! Squares are such a great shape! I think a lot of the recurring themes are a showcasing of which part of my process I enjoy the most.
3. What type of gems are you drawn to?
It changes all the time and is especially based on which stones I have at that time. Currently I am loving Emeralds.
4. Do you ever dream about jewellery or ideas?
I don't dream much at all to be honest. I am a biiig day dreamer though and jewellery is definitely something that pops into my mind all the time. Especially when I am wearing it!
5. How does working in other disciplines (music, fashion, photography) or in collaboration with others inform your jewellery work?
I think it gives me a whole different perspective on not just those different fields, but my own work too. For example seeing how my jewellery is styled into an outfit worn by a musician in a music video. I have friends in these spaces, and the collaborative projects we have worked on are some of my favourite experiences jewellery has given me. Working in these spaces has introduced me to a bunch of cool people and opened doors to further broaden my collaborative range.
6. Do you draw energy from shiny objects? Do you seek them out, outside of your work in life or possessions?
Definitely, SHINY OBJECTS ARE INEVITABLE!
