We are delighted to welcome back Japanese artist and perfumer Sari to New Zealand this November for a brand-new workshop and an exciting fragrance launch.
Join us to experience Sari’s deep knowledge of olfaction and her unique creative performance through the essence of fragrance. This new workshop has been co-designed by Sari and Public Record.
During the session, you will:

Capture fragrance in ice cubes and pour hot tea over them to hear the scent breaking through ice, while listening to the sounds of melting fragrance.

Taste the tea, paired with a complementary Japanese sweet.

Create your own hand-rolled incense under Sari’s guidance.

This intimate workshop is a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of Japan’s most influential modern perfumers. You will use natural essences that Sari has personally gathered and distilled in Japan, and take home the incense you create. Alongside the making, Sari will share stories from her inspiring international career.
About Sari
Sari is the co-founder of Sari, a fragrance studio known for contemporary and innovative scents that bridge East and West. She is widely recognised as one of Japan’s leading perfumers and travels internationally to collaborate and share her techniques.
This November, this event will be kicking off our annual great exhibition, Modern Japanese Craft 25' in New Zealand.
With deep knowledge of both traditional Japanese Kōdō (incense ceremony) and Western perfumery, Sari brings bold originality to her work. With her background in music composition, she often crafts fragrances as if composing sound – finding harmony between music and scent. Her perfumes are guided by rhythm and melody, creating atmospheres of tranquillity and resonance.
During the workshop, Sari will introduce her distinctive blending and distillation methods, and guide you in creating incense that reflects her approach to fragrance as both art and performance.
Kōdō is the traditional Japanese art of appreciating the scents of aromatic woods blended with other natural ingredients to create fragrance.
