‘Somantic Resonance’

Bridgit Day, Second exhibition at Public Record - A large scale, body of collection in 2026

We’re delighted to announce our second exhibition with Bridget Day. Over the past year, Bridget has been quietly and steadily building a remarkable new collection, creating an even larger and more compelling body of work that reflects her memories and the intimate connections between her body, nature and landscape through her uku, clay sculptures.

Her sensory relationship with clay brings a sense of healing, joy and connection to her practice, qualities that are beautifully expressed in her work.

One of the great joys of working with artists is welcoming them back over time and witnessing how their practices evolve, deepen and flourish. Following her sold-out exhibition with us last time, we’re especially excited to present this new collection in our new gallery space, where the scale and context offer fresh possibilities for her work to unfold.

Some works take up to a year to complete, slowly built by hand and carefully refined into remarkably thin-walled ceramic sculptures with complex, curving forms. The patience, sensitivity and extraordinary skill behind each piece invite us to look more closely.

Artist Statement:

My body is my first intelligence. It holds experience, memory and sensation long before words arrive, and through making, these find form. I call this Somatic Resonance: a practice of sensing and responding to what is felt but not yet spoken, as a way of understanding myself and others.

I build by hand, first pinching and then coiling, in a relationship with the clay rather than shaping it from a distance. Once a form is built, I carve back into the surface, cutting away the outer skin to reveal the texture beneath. Washes of colour sit lightly on top, so the materiality of the clay remains visible.

My forms are inspired by nature, real or imagined, and sit somewhere between landscape and body. After many years as a landscape architect, I no longer see them as separate. The body is not a viewer of the natural world; it is part of it, with its own cycles of growth, tension and repair.

Each work embraces imperfection and finds strength in vulnerability. My hope is that you will pause in front of them, even briefly, and feel a connection to the natural world, to the people around you, and to yourself.
