This exhibition marks Natsumi Kobayashi’s second presentation in Aotearoa, bringing together a body of work shaped by experiences from her last visit two and a half years ago. Since that time, Kobayashi’s practice has continued to evolve, reflecting both her lived encounters and the increasing clarity of her artistic perspective.


Landscape & Borrowed Forms:

Like travel helping us notice everyday details, Kobayashi’s work shifts easily between close-up and wide views to understand experience. Her prints express an inner emotional world, shown in an abstract way that values feeling and perception over literal depiction.

Kobayashi’s printmaking approach is distinctive. Working within material and situational constraints, she adapts and modifies traditional techniques to suit her circumstances. Rather than limiting her practice, these constraints have guided her away from meticulous detail and toward a deeper attentiveness to her own point of view. The act of transferring images onto paper becomes a site where restriction and intuition meet, producing forms that closely align with her way of seeing.

The works in this exhibition reveal an artist whose practice is continually shaped by experience and reflection. As Kobayashi’s state of mind matures, her visual language becomes increasingly defined, quietly precise, contemplative, and deeply personal.
