Collection: Brooke Georgia

Brooke Georgia is an Ōtautahi based artist whose practice is one of gleaning materials that bring their own histories with them. Her relationship to these objects involves a cycle of deterioration, obliteration, salvage and renewal, repairing until the story buried in the found thing is remade. In her work interior spaces are important architecture for arranging/rearranging personal embodied experiences.

In Georgia’s clothing, under the label being, garments are made from natural textiles that have already been worn/out, and are treated with intuitive stitching, dyeing and reworking. Linings are exposed, holes mended with delicate threads and knitted surfaces are hewn together with heavy French seams. As Simone Weil wrote in Gravity and Grace ‘if the thing desired is really light, the desire for light produces it’ in this way Georgia works towards a new known.
