Collection: Cindy Leong

Cindy Leong is a Malaysian-Chinese abstract artist born and based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Her work explores the intersection of abstract painting and Eastern philosophy, drawing from her experiences with Vipassana (a ten-day silent meditation course) in 2018 and 2021.

She is interested in how abstract painting can act as a meditative process—through repetition, mark- making, and intuition, she enters a flow state where time dissolves. "Repetition enables my mind to still and enter the present moment. With prolonged practice, the mind becomes more aware and conscious.”

She views her practice as both a remedy and a quiet protest against the relentless "attention economy" and the overwhelming influx of distractions. In this sense, her work functions as a subtle form of activism—silently resisting the accelerated pace of modern life. She considers her practice a dual approach: both a personal catharsis and an invitation for the viewer to slow down, reflect, and engage in a more introspective experience.

She is currently completing her Master of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland.
