Collection: Susan Thomas

Susan Thomas is an Aotearoa New Zealand painter, based in Auckland. She has exhibited widely with works held in many private and corporate collections.

Susan has long worked with themes of human strengths and frailties. Her abstract paintings are about the intangible – memory, human needs, coping mechanisms, behaviour, communication and truth.

In recent years her work has explored family DNA and the fragility of memory as she witnessed her mother’s decline.

“My work is unintentionally autobiographical. It tends to follow my life experiences and the issues I am facing or interested in at the time I make the work. I don’t always recognise this until later on. The themes evolve and build on one another, fading in and out of view as they do in life.”
