'A house built from inherited bricks' - silk organza piece

'A house built from inherited bricks' - silk organza piece

6x4  - 'A house built from inherited bricks'

Silk organza hand sewn with silk thread, dyed with organic indigo grown locally by Gina Russel of growing textile in Christchuch in NZ.

Made for 'Yawning at the Fray' for The Physics Room gallery in Christchuch in 24'

The pieces of silk cut out from the darker hanging on the left were used to create the surface of the second. These works were made to fit the dimensions of the windows at The Physics Room, screening these portals into the world beyond the gallery. They are a reflection on the parts of his parents we inherit and how we put those pieces together in new ways to build our own selves. The sacrifices his parents made to give his brother and He a better life are layered deep in his body and spirit: a foundation for his life's story. Indigo pigment cannot be found in any plant species endemic to Aotearoa, this dye was produced using Persicaria Tinctoria, which is endemic to East Asia. The colour recalls his motherland but was grown on this whenua, which He calls home. These works are saturated in this metaphor, celebrating his friendship with Gina and the wonderful connections He has made through my practice.
