Pōhutukawa Stool
Pōhutukawa Stool
The sourcing of her material is central to the artist work. The wood she uses is
locally sourced in NZ, reclaimed waste wood, characterful old growth hardwood, rare
endemic wood, that are reaching the end of their normal lives. It mostly comes from
properties she has been living on.
Each piece of wood is personally sourced by the artist, collected, cut to size,
cleaned, and stored to dry. She likes to start creating with a raw ‘off the tree’ piece of
wood. This is an important aspect of the artist work. It slows down her creative
process and can be challenging when assembling wooden pieces with irregular
surfaces. But this is what allows her to keep, and bring forward, a connection with
the essence of the tree in her work.
A strong relationship with nature is at the source of the artist creation. Her working
rhythm, materials, quality of finish, and place for creation are all linked with nature.
In this work, the seat is made of mature Pōhutukawa. The hole is a natural shape
that appeared during the cleaning process of the wood. This part was burned
separately in an open fire, and then assembled.
The legs are made of mature Totara, from old NZ fence posts.
The work is finished with a natural NZ oil finish.
This is a unique piece, conceived and realised by the artist.

*PRODUCT CARE
Wood does react to its environment. You should avoid placing the pieces close to
intense sources of heat (a fire or heater), or in direct sunlight.
The wood is finished with a natural NZ oil finish that lends a subtle, semi matt lustre
to the surface. Occasional cleaning with a lightly damp cloth is all that it requires,
although you may want to wipe the piece down with a light neutral oil from time to
time.
